Cedar has been revered as the World Tree and as the abode of Ea since the fifth millennium BCE. Ea was the lord of the earth, the god of wisdom and the principal deity of southern Mesopotamia.

As a result, Cedar is considered a sacred and significant tree for oracles and prophecy; being worked with in ceremonies to restore strength and life  and for purifying with smudging and smoke offerings. Cedar stems from the Hebrew word “Qatar”, meaning ‘to smudge’.

Cedar was the most sought-after timbers for its’ strength, durability and aroma. The physical qualities and the spiritual strengths of Cedar were honoured together as the physical qualities were reflections of the presence of the divine inside the tree.
